Tributes paid to Laois farmer 'who always had a great story'

The community in Abbeyleix, Co. Laois is mourning the loss of Danny Cass, 91, a local farmer, father of three and grandfather of nine.

The farmer died in a vehicle collision on Saturday (June 27).

The local GAA club said on social media: “On behalf of all at Abbeyleix GAA we wish to pass on our most heartfelt condolences to Michael, Charlie, Sarah and the Cass family on the sudden passing of their dad Danny.

“Danny was a regular down on the banks perched in his jeep proudly watching on as his grandchildren played hurling and camogie.

“A man who always had a great story to tell.”

The Harps Camogie Club offered “deepest condolences to Jennifer and the Cass family on the very sad passing of their father and grandfather Danny”.

Others described Danny as a “character”, a storyteller and a hard worker.

Announcing his passing, his family said: “A proud member of the farming community, Danny leaves behind a legacy of hard work, dedication and love of the land.

“Danny will remain close to our hearts and his memory will be kept alive through the stories and fond memories of him that we hold.”

Reposing takes place in the Chapel of Rest adjoining the Church of the Most Holy Rosary Abbeyleix today (Tuesday, June 30) from 6:00p.m to 8:00p.m.

Removal to the Church of the Most Holy Rosary Abbeyleix for 12:00p.m Requiem Mass on Wednesday (July 1). Interment afterwards will be in the adjoining cemetery.

Witness appeal

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to the fatal road traffic incident that took place in Tullyroe, Abbeyleix, Co. Laois on Saturday, June 27.

Road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling on the R433 near Tullyroe, Abbeyleix, Co. Laois, on Saturday between 9.30a.m and 10.15a.m, are asked to make this footage available to investigating gardaí.
