Training days for women in agriculture to be held in Leitrim
Two practical training days for women in farming are set to take place in Co. Leitrim this autumn.
The free events are being run by the Agri-Climate Rural Environment Scheme (ACRES) Co-operation Project.
The first training day is scheduled to take place on Saturday, September 5 at Manorhamilton Mart, covering livestock handling, farm safety and farm technology.
The second event, on Saturday, October 17, will involve a machinery demonstration day at the FutureCast Centre, Manorhamilton.
Both of the events are expected to run from 10:00a.m to 3:00p.m each day.
Registration for the training days are now open. Places are limited and will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.
Women
Rachel Irwin, operations officer with the ACRES Co-operation Project, said that both days will be "hands on". She said women farming across Leitrim and the wider region will spend the day working with the stock, the machinery and the equipment, alongside others doing the same job on their own farms.
"Women are doing this work every day, and the questions they ask us are practical ones.
"Handling stock safely on your own, knowing your way around a piece of machinery before you need it. That is what these two days are built around.
"There is also time to meet other women farming nearby, which people tell us is worth as much as the training itself," she added.
