A teenage girl has died after a road traffic collision involving a tractor in Co. Cavan last night (Tuesday, May 30).

Gardaí confirmed that officers in Cavan town are investigating a single vehicle fatal road traffic collision involving a tractor that occurred on the L2514 at Loughduff, close to the county boundary with Co. Longford at around 11:00p.m.

A female juvenile (aged in her late teens), who was a passenger in the tractor, was fatally injured when it collided with a ditch.

Her body has been removed from the scene to the mortuary in Cavan General Hospital where a post mortem will take place in due course, Gardaí said.

A male juvenile (also aged in his late teens) who was driving the tractor was uninjured.

The road is currently closed pending an examination by forensic collision investigators and local diversions are in place.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward.

Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling in the area between 10.45pm and 11.15pm are asked to make this footage available to Gardaí.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Cavan Garda Station, the Garda Confidential Line, or any Garda station.

Tragically, this is not the first death of a young person involving a tractor in the country this month.

A teenage boy died following a tractor crash in Co. Mayo on Saturday, May 20.

Shortly after 8:15p.m that day, Gardaí and emergency services were alerted after a tractor overturned on the L1610 at Scarduane near Claremorris.

The driver and sole occupant of the tractor, a 13-year-old boy, was treated at the scene for serious injuries and removed to Galway University Hospital, according to An Garda Síochána.

The boy was subsequently transferred to Temple Street Hospital in Dublin where he passed away the following day (Sunday, May 21).
