This year’s Teagasc National Dairy Conference will move online with a series of four ‘virtual events’ to take place across two days this month.

The events will take place at 10:00am and 7:00pm on both Tuesday, November 24, and Wednesday, November 25.

The focus for these events will be “the efficient use of fertiliser nitrogen and improving sustainability through improving on-farm efficiency”, according Teagasc’s Dr. Tom O’Dwyer, who announced the details today (Friday, November 13).

Dr. Pat Dillon, head of Teagasc’s Animal and Grassland, Research and Innovation Programme, said: “There is a significant focus on fertiliser nitrogen, farm productivity and environmental footprint currently.

So it’s timely to look at the scientific evidence underpinning the current advice for dairy farmers in a number of areas, including improving the efficiency of fertiliser nitrogen use in dairy systems; balancing farm productivity with environmental outcomes; and improving sustainability through the use of proven technologies at farm level.

Dr. Emma-Louise Coffey, presenter of the Teagasc Dairy Edge Podcast – who will host the 7:00pm event on both days – commented: “It will be great to pick up on the themes discussed earlier in the day and to talk through the practical, on-farm aspects with top dairy farmers and Teagasc experts.”

The conference will be free to join, but registration is required. All four events will be live, and viewers will be able to pose their questions.

The 10:00am events will be panel discussions featuring Teagasc personnel, while the Dairy Edge Podcast later in the day will feature farmer interviews.

Further details are available on the Teagasc website.

New reports

In the course of this year’s National Dairy Conference, Teagasc will publish two new reports.

A report called ‘Review of the Influence of Nitrogen Application Rate, Soil Type and Agroclimate Location on Grass Production, Feed Budget, Nitrogen Use Efficiency and Farm Profitability’ will be published online and discussed during the day.

As well as that, the ‘Teagasc 2027 Sectoral Roadmap; Dairy’ will be published.
