Protection system from newcomer SIP…results in a safer ‘snip’

The latest batch of SIP mowers was recently launched onto the Irish market by its distributor Farmec Ireland.

The machines, some of which are relatively new to the country, have several noteworthy features – such as a cutter-bar (or disc-bed if you prefer) safety system and a two-year manufacturer’s warranty.

SIP, which is headquartered in Slovenia but describes itself as having a “German mentality”, is best known for its mowers, tedders and rakes.

The company builds a range of machines for both farmers and contractors. Its origins stretch back over 60 years. It claims to have been the first company to develop a twin-rotor rake – a type of machine which is now offered by a huge swath of manufacturers.

SIP claims that its machines are built using reputable components, from the likes of SKF (bearings) and Walterscheid (drive-line components). The firm is very enthusiastic about its powder-coated paint finishes.

Among SIP’s “innovations” is its Disc Drive Safety System (DDSS) for its mowers. Now ten years old, the firm says that – since its launch – it has not received any warranty claims directly regarding the cutter-bar (or disc-bed). That is, itself, a lofty claim.

The DDSS system consists of an intermediate flange with brass shear pins, which shear in the event of a disc overload – to prevent damage to the mower bed’s gear-drive system. The shear pins can apparently be changed “quickly and easily”.

Other features of SIP’s Silver Cut mower line-up include:

  • Central-pivot cutter bar (disc-bed).
  • Hydro-pneumatic, adjustable suspension system.
  • Reinforced flat-profile, bolted cutter-bar (disc-bed) – running in an oil bath.
  • Discs made from “wear-resistant” Hardox steel.
  • “Rigidly-mounted” disc drive-shafts, with double-closed bearings.
  • Hardox steel wearing skids
  • QCS quick-change blade system.
  • Optional, adjustable plastic-finger conditioner.

SIP mowers, which include tractor-mounted, front-mounted, trailed and combination models, have cutting widths from 2.16m right up to 9.6m.
