Producer prices for food products increase in year to May - CSO

Producer prices for food products increased by 1.3% in the 12 months to May 2026, new figures from the Central Statistics Office (CSO) show.

The Wholesale Price Index for May 2026 shows that producer prices for meat and meat products were down 1.3% compared with May 2025, while dairy products were down 0.6% in the year.

The CSO said one of the most notable changes in producer prices for food products over the 12 months to May 2026 was for fish and fish products, rising by 8.9%.

Producer prices for food products increased by 0.7% between April and May 2026.

Wholesale prices

The CSO figures show that all energy fuels were down by 7.8% in May 2026 compared with April 2026, and up 37% comparing May 2026 with May 2025.

Wholesale electricity prices rose by 10.1% in the month to May 2026 and were 33.1% higher than May 2025.

Deirdre Toher, statistician in the CSO's prices division, said: "Wholesale price inflation showed an increase in May 2026 with a 0.9% growth in the overall producer price index for manufacturing industries in the month.

"The price index for export sales was up by 0.9% since April 2026, while the index for home sales was up by 0.4% in the month.

"Producer prices for products sold on the domestic market were 3.7% higher in May 2026 compared with May 2025.

"In the 12 months to May 2026, export producer prices rose by 1.2%, while overall producer prices were up by 1.6%."

Toher added that all energy fuels were down by 7.8% in the month, largely driven by decreases in fuel oil (-9.7%) and gas oil (-6.6%).
