The returning 2019 Nuffield Scholars will present the findings of their research online in a series of virtual presentations from next Monday (November 23).

The week-long virtual ‘lunch and learn’ series will feature one 10-minute presentation each day, beginning at 1:30pm, in which a different scholar will outline the fruits of their research.

Karen Brosnan, the chairperson of Nuffield Ireland, said: “We were disappointed to have to cancel this year’s Nuffield Conference but we are delighted to be able to offer our returning 2019 scholars a platform to share their learnings with the industry.

“Understanding that people are experiencing a level of online fatigue, this format allows delegates to tune in for just 10 minutes each day at lunchtime over the course of the week and garner some invaluable insights,” Brosnan added.

The returning 2019 scholars, and their topics, are:

  • Ailish Moriarty (Monday, November 23) – ‘Assess the role of milk screening for disease with the development of an effective herd health system’;
  • Alison Holmes (Tuesday, November 24) – ‘Are we fit to farm? Investigating Irish Farmer Health Status and Sustainability’;
  • Ciara O’Halloran (Wednesday, November 25) – ‘Food tourism: Its potential uses as an educational tool to shorten the gap between the consumer and producer’;
  • Karina Pierce (Thursday, November 26) – ‘Future proofing the Irish agri-food sector through robust research’;
  • Pat O’Meara (Friday, November 27) – ‘How can Irish farmers be encouraged to meet GHG (greenhouse gas) emissions targets’.

Internationally, there are around 70 Nuffield Scholars awarded each year. Each group works together to develop an understanding of the big issues in agriculture.
