Landowners and residents in the areas affected by flooding in south Co. Galway are encouraged to have their say on a new flood relief scheme.

That part of the county, especially Gort, has been subjected to numerous severe flooding incidents over the years. Galway County Council and the Office of Public Works (OPW) are bringing forward plans to deliver the South Galway (Gort Lowlands) Flood Relief Scheme, following a feasibility study being carried out.

Independent TD Seán Canney and independent councillor Geraldine Donohue are highlighting the importance of those who own land or are living in any of the affected areas having their say on this scheme.

‘No one should feel silly’

“If for some reason you are a landowner or resident in any of the affected areas and are unsure what questions to ask or just want to know more about what is proposed, it is important that you have your opinion or suggestions on the record,” deputy Canney said.

The website is quite technical, and no one should feel silly for asking even the simplest of a question or highlighting their concerns.

“It is vital that any local knowledge for such a mammoth scheme be recorded and such knowledge is welcomed by all.”

The proposals aim to develop flood protection measures across the region and mitigate the impacts of extreme flood events, the deputy explained.

Important to have your say

“To inform the final design of the scheme and prior to submitting the planning application, Galway County Council and the OPW are currently holding an online public consultation as a result of Covid-19 restrictions and this is due to close on April 3,” he added.

“It is important to have your say on this proposal.”

Those interested can find an online questionnaire to submit their views, and further contact details can be found on the website.

Alternatively, deputy Canney and councillor Donohue can be contacted, and they wish to remind everyone that “there is no such thing as a silly question”.
