Milk production in the US increased by 2.6% this November when compared to the corresponding month last year, figures from the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) show.

In total, just over 7.3 billion litres of milk were produced in the 23 major milk producing states last month, it says.

This follows on from a similar increase seen in October, when production jumped by 2.7% on the same month the year before, to bring the total for the month to nearly 7.27 billion litres.

Milk production per cow in the US has also reached its highest level since milk recording records started in the 23 states in 2003.

Back in November, the average milk produced per cow stood at 27L/day, an increase of nearly 0.6L/day on the same month in 2015.

Meanwhile, figures from the USDA also show that the number of dairy cows present in the 23 major states increased by 33,000 in November on 2015 levels, bringing the total to 8.67m head.
