Claas is set to introduce the latest version of its high-horsepower Axion 900 tractor range.
The Axion 900 series was first introduced in 2011; 3,000 of these tractors have been built since then. The output range of these models (Axion 920-960) has been increased; it now stretches from 325 to 445hp.

These engines are compliant with the Stage IV (Tier 4) emissions standard. These units have new variable-geometry turbo-chargers as standard – to deliver “optimum charge-air pressure”.
As a result, says Claas, 70% of maximum torque is available even when idling.
Thanks to the “advanced low-speed concept”, the engine in the Axion 900 series is claimed to develop 18% more torque than previously at a lower speed (up to 200rpm lower). This is said to reduce fuel consumption.
Further fuel savings of approximately 2L per hour are apparently achieved by automatically reducing the idling speed from 800 to 650rpm when stationary. In ECO PTO mode, up to 95% of the maximum engine output is claimed to be transferred to the PTO shaft.
Stepless transmission
All models in the latest Axion 900 series come as standard with an updated, continuously variable ZF Terramatic transmission – already in use in the Axion 800 series. It, says Claas, has now been adapted to the higher output of the 900 series tractors. Available travel speeds are from 0.05 to 50kph.
The CMATIC transmission control system uses a new generation of software, which incorporates many “customer requirements identified under real-world conditions”. For example, cruise control can be deactivated with the accelerator pedal, and the transmission adjusts more rapidly to the job in hand as the driver can switch between two saved “engine response” values – by pressing a button.
Two versions available
For the first time, the Axion 900 series is available in two versions – CIS+ and CEBIS.
CIS+ (Claas Information System) incorporates a 7in CIS colour display in the A-pillar and a multi-function armrest with ELECTROPILOT four-way control lever and DRIVESTICK control lever to operate the CMATIC transmission.
CEBIS (Claas electronic on-board information system) has a new terminal with a 12in touch-screen display and an armrest console with a CMOTION multi-function control lever – for operation of many functions using just your thumb and first two fingers.
Claas GPS steering systems are available ex factory for CIS+ and CEBIS models. Claas’ TELEMATICS telemetry package comes as standard.
All Axion 900 series tractors have load-sensing hydraulics, with an output of 150 or 220L/min and release levers for all hydraulic couplings at the rear. Up to six spool valves are available on CIS+ models and up to eight on CEBIS versions. In both versions, they are operated electronically by means of rocker switches in the armrest and the ELECTROPILOT four-way control lever.
In addition, function buttons on the armrest and multi-function control lever can be configured for any of the spool valves.
Spool valve prioritisation
On CEBIS models, the driver can assign priority to any spool valve. The pre-set oil volume for the prioritised spool valve then remains almost constant, even when other spool valves are in use. Claas says that this is useful, for example, with continuously-operating equipment – such as hydraulic motors or pneumatic precision seed drills, which need a constant oil flow.
New-generation Axion 900 series tractors are optionally available with different LED lighting packages. The packages include up to 20 LED work lights and LED road lights.
In addition, all models can be fitted with the removable tool drawer – with telescopic runners – which is already a feature of 800 series tractors.
Another useful detail, says Claas, for practical day-to-day use are the “easily accessible” external battery terminals on all models. This means that the tractor can be used as a power source for jobs such as in-field re-fuelling.
The new-generation Axion 900 series tractors will be unveiled at Agritechnica 2017, in Germany, and will be available to buy from spring 2018.
