Met Éireann is currently seeking a postdoctoral researcher to help develop a new weather model for intense rainfall events in Ireland over short durations.
The national meteorological service already has an intense rainfall model which is based on historical data, but it does not include the effects of climate change.
The researcher will work with the Climate Services Division on a software-based system which will account for climate change projections predicting rainfall amounts at any specific location required by a user.
The selected candidate will explore various avenues for developing the new model by examining methodology used by Met Éireann and other meteorological services.
Met Éireann
Met Éireann said that the potential impacts of climate change on annual, seasonal and short-duration intense rainfall events have typically been assessed based on a range of climate models.
However, uncertainties remain on the ability of global and regional climate models to accurately resolve short duration (24 hours or less) high intensity rainfall events.
Met Éireann said that daily and sub-daily extreme rainfall projections can be critical for analysis and infrastructure design.
Intense rainfall modelling is an area of active research worldwide and includes extreme
value analysis (EVA) techniques.
The final model will be accompanied by comprehensive intense rainfall datasets and maps.
Candidates for the position must hold a doctorate of philosophy (PhD) or equivalent experience in mathematics, physics, atmospheric sciences or a related environmental computational discipline.
Met Éireann said that applicants who are close to completion of a PhD will also be considered for the role.
They should also have strong skills in data analysis, model development and programming.
The temporary position, which has an annual payment rate starting at €51,042, will be for a period of two years with the possibility that this will be extended.
On appointment €51,042 per annum, after 1 year €54,341 year per annum
The closing date for receipt of applications is 5:00p.m on Sunday, April 28, 2024.
