Clare Marts in Ennis, Co. Clare hosted its suckler and weanling sale on Tuesday (September 29), with 874 head on offer.

A report issued by the mart said this week saw a “fine size sale”, adding that there were “some lovely suckling stock available" with pairs making up to €4,760/set and in-calf lots making to €4,150.

The report also noted that there was "more shipping activity and more bull beef finishers around" than usual at this week's sale.  

Weanling bulls

Weanling bulls over 300kgs were described as dearer by 10c/kg.

The weanling bulls in the sale made up to €7.26/kg, which went for a 245kg Charolais bull that sold for €1,780.

Another 440kg Charolais bull sold for €2,700, or €6.14/kg.

Other notable weanling bull prices from the sale included:

Three 367kg Charolais bulls sold for €2,320, or €6.33/kg;
One 290kg Limousin bulls sold for €1,990, or €6.86/kg;         
One 340kg Charolais bull sold for €2,280, or €6.70/kg;
Three 358kg Limousin bull sold for €2,250, or €6.28/kg;
Three 342kg Limousin bull sold for €2,160, or €6.32/kg;
One 425kg Charolais bull sold for €2,580, or €6.07/kg;
One 355kg Charolais bull sold for €2,220, or €6.25/kg;
One 340kg Charolais bull sold for €2,280, or €6.70/kg. 

Weanling heifers

In the weanling heifer sale, heifers under 300kg were dearer than in last week's sale.

However, heifers weighing 300-400kg were back in price by approximately 5c/kg on the previous week.

Heifers over 400kg saw a similar trade to last week, according to the mart report.

One 305kg Charolais heifer was sold for €1,890, or €6.19/kg.

Another 315kg Charolais heifer sold for €1,880 or €5.97/kg, while two 285kg Limousin heifers sold for €1,700, or €5.96/kg.

Other notable weanling prices from the sale include:

One 265kg Limousin heifer sold for €1,440. or €5.43/kg;
Four 212kg Limousin heifers sold for €1,200. or €5.65/kg;
Two 255kg Charolais heifer sold for €1,370, or €5.37/kg;
Two 447kg Limousin heifers sold for €2,110, or €4.71/kg;
Two 270kg Charolais heifer sold for €1,550 or €5.74/kg.

According to the mart report, Tuesday's sale saw "quite a number of dairy cross runners".
