Kilkenny Mart hosted its weekly general cattle sale on Thursday (September 24), with approximately 1,100 cattle on offer.

Auctioneer George Candler said that there was a bigger sale of cattle on offer in the most recent sale with continental bullocks and heifers in good demand and the majority of these types ranging from €4.40-€5.40/kg.

There was 98% clearance of the cattle on offer in the sale.

However, Candler added: "The lighter type animals were in short supply, with quality not as good as last week's smaller sale.

"Beef met a sharper trade in both the bullock and heifer rings."

Heavy bullocks over 600kg averaged €3.73/kg or €2,505/head in the most recent sale.

Some sample prices from the sale include:

A Limousin bullock weighing 810kg sold for €3,400 or €4.20/kg;
Two Charolais bullocks weighing 715kg on average sold for €2,990/head or €4.18/kg;
Two Angus bullocks weighing 650kg each sold for €2,340/head or €3.60/kg

Beef heifers averaged €3.65/kg or €2,365 per head. One Charolais heifer weighing 680kg sold for €2,760 or €4.04/kg.

500-600kg bullocks averaged €4.10/kg or €2,215 per head. The stand-out sale in this category was that of a pen of five Limousin bullocks that sold for €2,520/head, or €4.85/kg.

Other notable prices from the sale include:

A Charolais bullock weighing 575kg sold for €2,750, or €4.78;
Five Hereford bullocks weighing on average 525kg sold for €2,360, or €4.50/kg;
Three Angus bullocks weighing on average 530kg sold for €2,160, or €4.06/kg.

Bullocks in the 400-500kg category averaged €3.76/kg or €1,705/head, while bullocks under 400kg averaged €3.90/kg or €1,420/head.

Two Friesian bullocks weighing 300kg sold for €1,020/head or €3.40/kg and another four Hereford bullocks weighing 360kg sold for €1,360 or €3.78/kg.

The Friesian cull cows in the sale ranged in price from €1.50-€3.20/kg while beef breed cows ranged from €3.20-€4.00/kg in the sale.
