Clare Co-Operative Marts held its annual weanling show and sale in Ennis on Tuesday (August 25), with some very high prices from a "super yard".

The top call of the day was for a Belgian Blue-cross heifer weighing 410kg that sold for €7,110 at €17.55/kg.

She also took the first place award for Belgian Blue heifers.

A report issued after the sale noted the quality on display, adding that a rise in numbers from last year's sale indicated a confidence in the weanling trade.

There was particularly high standard of Belgian Blues, Limousins and Charolais cattle at the sale, according to the report.

The shipper demand was very strong, with 49% of bull weanlings bought by shippers.

Weanling bulls

Weanlings in the 325kg-420kg range were the best-sellers in the ring; however, the heavier bulls met a limited market.

The top price from the weanling bull ring was the €2,820 paid for a 380kg Belgian Blue bull, at €7.42/kg.

The top prize for weanling Charolais bulls went to a Charolais-cross (pictured above) weighing 490kg that sold for €2,400 at €4.90/kg.

The prize for best Belgian Blue weanling bull went to one weighing 545kg that sold for €3,000 at €5.50/kg.

Other impressive sales include a 360kg Belgian Blue bull sold for €2,520 at €7.00/kg, and a 420kg Limousin bull sold for €2,680 at €6.38/kg.

A 340kg Charolais bull sold for €2,160 at €6.35/kg;
A 215kg Limousin bull sold for €1,370 at €6.37/kg;
A 425kg Belgian Blue bull sold for €2,620 at €6.19/kg;
A 435kg Charolais bull sold for €2,480 at €5.70/kg.

Heifers

Alongside the €7,110 for the Belgian Blue-cross heifer weighing 410kg, the heifer ring saw some further impressive prices.

The first place prize for Limousin weanling heifers went to a Limousin-cross heifer weighing 420kg that sold for €6,000 at €14.28/kg.

A 350kg Belgian Blue-cross heifer sold for €3,020 at €8.62/kg; while another 410kg Belgian Blue-cross heifer sold for €3,000 at €7.32/kg.

In addition, a 325kg Limousin-cross heifer sold for €2,090 at €6.43/kg.
