A man in his 60s was scheduled to appear in court this morning in connection with an alleged murder in Co. Kerry, An Garda Siochana has confirmed.
The man was detained at Listowel Garda Station overnight; after he was involved in an ‘incident’ yesterday in which a 74-year-old man died.
The accused was scheduled to appear before Tralee District Court at 10:30am this morning, charged in connection with the death.
It has been confirmed that a murder investigation is underway surrounding the death of the man, following a ‘collision’ involving a car and a teleporter (otherwise known as a telehandler or telescopic handler).
The incident reportedly occurred in Rattoo, Ballyduff in Co. Kerry.
Both the Gardai and Emergency Services were called to the scene at approximately 8:45am yesterday morning.
The 74-year-old man, who was driving the car, was pronounced dead at the scene; while the driver of the teleporter was uninjured.
It is reported that Gardai became suspicious when puncture wounds were discovered on the victim’s body.
The teleporter driver was arrested by investigating Gardai and was detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.
It is believed that staff from the Garda Technical Bureau and the State Pathologist attended the scene. The road was closed off for a full technical examination following the incident.
The deceased has been named locally as Anthony O’Mahony, from Ardoughter, near Causeway in Co. Kerry. A full post-mortem is expected to be completed today.
It is believed that both men are farmers and knew each other prior to the incident. The motive behind the alleged murder has not been confirmed by Gardai.
However, it has been reported that the ‘incident’ allegedly arose due to a conflict over the use of a ‘bird banger’.
