A farmer in his early 60s has died in a farm accident in Mullahorn, Co. Cavan, a Garda spokesperson has confirmed.
The spokesperson said that the accident happened around 11am this morning (March 10).
It is believed that the accident involved a tractor and that the man was working alone.
Gardai are investigating and the scene has been preserved.
The Health and Safety Authority (HSA) is also conducting an investigation into the farm accident and inspectors are at the scene.
It is the third farming-related death this year. Last week, a man died in Co. Limerick after he was electrocuted while hedgecutting.
The accident happened in Athea, in the south of the county, on land planted with forestry.
Earlier this year a man in his 60s died in Co. Kilkenny when a loader fell on him. Last year 17 people died in farming related accidents.
Machinery is associated with 17% of farm deaths, according to Teagasc and between 2005 and 2014, 58 people were killed due to accidents with tractors and farm vehicles.
According to Health and Safety Authority (HSA) figures, 73% of these deaths were caused by crushing.
Some 12% of fatalities were caused by the vehicle overturning, 10% were struck by the vehicle and 5% of fatalities were due to falls from the vehicle.
The main causes are being crushed by a part, entangled in the PTO shaft and other machine parts and being stuck in machinery.
