Investigations are ongoing after a fire broke out overnight at the old co-op building in Athboy, Co. Meath last night (Thursday, December 4), according to An Garda Síochána.

The blaze broke out at approximately 10:00pm last night with a “male person” seen running from the scene shortly after it started, local Gardaí said.

In a brief statement on social media, Gardaí based in Co. Meath said: “Gardaí are investigating a fire which occurred last night at the old Co-Op premises at Lower Bridge Street, Athboy.

“The fire started at 10:00pm approximately,” the Garda post said.

A male person was seen running from the scene in the Navan direction shortly after the fire started. A technical examination of the scene is ongoing this morning.

Oldcastle Co-op Fire

Last month, Gardaí arrested and charged a juvenile male in connection with an investigation into a fire at a building in Oldcastle, Co. Meath, on Saturday, October 31.

The juvenile appeared before a special sitting of Trim District Court at 2:15pm on Tuesday, November 3.

At approximately 8:00pm on Saturday night, October 31, Gardaí and local fire services attended the scene of a fire at the building of Oldcastle Co Op at Railway Yard, Oldcastle. The fire is thought to have broken out at approximately 7:30pm.

No injuries were reported, although there was extensive damage to the property. Fire service personnel extinguished the fire.
