Beef and tillage farmer based at Newgrange, Co. Meath, David Redhouse is set to host an on-farm event tomorrow (Tuesday, September 22).

The on-farm event is taking place in association with Kepak and Teagasc.

The event is titled: 'Healthy Soil. Healthy Water. Healthy Farms' and will kick off at 11:00am on the farm (Eircode: C15 X5EV).

The host farmer David Redhouse runs an beef and tillage enterprise, and the farm walk will showcase practical measures that can improve water quality while supporting productive and profitable farming systems.

The event forms part of the ongoing work taking place across the Boyne Catchment to support farmers in protecting and improving water quality under the Teagasc Better Farming for Water: 8 Actions for Change campaign.

Industry partner Kepak is involved in on-farm action within the Boyne Catchment, working alongside farmers, Teagasc and industry partners Lakeland Dairies and Tirlán, to encourage and support practical measures that can improve water quality while enhancing farm sustainability.

Farmers from counties Meath, Louth, Westmeath, Offaly, Kildare and Cavan are encouraged to attend the event, which will feature practical demonstrations and expert advice focused on actions that can be implemented on farms today.

Attendees will hear from a range of advisers and specialists, including Boyne Water Catchment co-ordinator, Fiona Doolan and Teagasc specialists.

Key topics to be discussed at the event include:

Soil health;
Nutrient management;
Buffer zones;
Catch crops;
Hedgerow establishment;
Tree planting;
Fencing;
Farmyard manure management.

The farm walk will provide an opportunity for farmers to see practical measures in action, engage directly with experts and learn how simple changes can deliver benefits for water quality, soil health and farm sustainability.

John Horgan, chair of the Boyne Water Quality Catchment Area steering group, said: "Farmers across the Boyne Catchment are already taking positive steps to improve water quality.

"This event is one of a series of planned farm events about showcasing practical actions that can be implemented on farms today.

"By bringing together farmers, advisers and industry partners, we can share knowledge, demonstrate what works in practice and support improvements in water quality while maintaining productive and profitable farming systems.

"We're delighted to host this event on David Redhouse's farm and would encourage farmers from the Boyne catchment to come along, see the measures in action and engage with the experts on the day."

Demonstration stations on the day will focus on:

Buffer zones and watercourse protection: Meabh O'Hagan (ASSAP Advisor);
Soil health: Dr Veronica Nyhan (Teagasc Plant and Soil Specialist);
Hedgerow establishment, tree planting and fencing: Edward Egan (Teagasc) and Luke McDermott (Kepak)
Organic manure use: Seán Óg McCormack (Teagasc Soil Cycle Project)

A complimentary lunch will be provided to all in attendance and the event is free to attend.
