An independent scrutineer has been appointed by Macra na Feirme for the organisation’s 38th presidential election count, which is set to take place later this week.

Ifac CEO John Donoghue will serve as independent election scrutineer, the rural youth organisation says.

The 38th Macra na Feirme presidential election count will take place tomorrow afternoon (Wednesday, April 7) at 2:00pm in the Irish Farm Centre.

A count of ballots will take place for the presidential position between two candidates:

  • John Keane, North Tipperary;
  • Daniel Long, South Tipperary.

There will also be a count for the Munster vice-president with two candidates in the running:

  • Áine McCarthy, Imokilly, Cork;
  • Elaine Houlihan, Limerick.

Yesterday evening, Macra na Feirme announced the appointment of Donoghue, with current Macra president and election returning officer Thomas Duffy stating:

“I am delighted to confirm that John Donoghue has been selected as the independent scrutineer for the presidential and Munster vice presidential elections.

“Macra na Feirme and our election candidates are fortunate to have someone of John’s experience, credibility and independence observe our election Count on Wednesday, April 7.

“John has served as independent scrutineer on two previous elections.

“Election candidates are aware of the important role that the independent scrutineer fulfils, and that we are fortunate to have John available to undertake this role,” Duffy concluded.
