IHFA board member resigns due to 'concerns'

A board member of the Irish Holstein Friesian Association (IHFA) has announced his resignation.

Denis Donohoe said his reasons for resigning include a "lack of transparency" and some board members not being "fully informed [of] what's happening" in relation to the association.

Donohoe said his resignation decision follows a board meeting on June 2, 2026 in Portlaoise.

He told Agriland he has been on the board of the IHFA for five years and representing the Laois/Offaly club.

He said he has been "very happy to represent but unfortunately I can't continue the role or fulfil my duties".

'Engage with stakeholders'

Donohoe stated: "I have concerns for our breed society for some time.

"I've been looking for [a] workshop in linear scoring and classification, some of my concerns in traits such as short teats, rump feet and legs.

"We need to engage with all stakeholders and express our concerns."

Donohoe said he wants to "see more promotion on pedigree bulls over SRM bulls".

"I believe the key objective of our society in helping members to progress their herds is not being addressed," Donohoe said.

He feels that there has been a "dismissing" of "views of members and process of democracy".

GenÉireann

There have been tensions in the association within the last year.

Members of the IHFA also expressed concerns, particularly regarding a proposed project, in 2025.

A proposal which was put forward then outlined the potential development of a nucleus herd and an IVF breeding service, and was part of a strategy to "increase genetic gain" within the breed.

'Concerned members' gathered and sent over 100 letters, including individual herd numbers, to the IHFA requesting an EGM late last year.
