Green Party leadership battle begins this week

The format in which the hustings for Green Party leadership take place this week may be different to times gone by, but the importance of the outcome is more significant than ever after the government formation.

Green Party leadership hustings will be taking place over the course of the next eight days via web conferencing technology Zoom.

The candidates – Eamon Ryan, leader of the Green Party and Minister for Climate Action, Communications Networks and Transport; and Catherine Martin, current deputy leader of the Green Party and Minister for Media, Tourism, Arts, Culture, Sport and the Gaeltacht – will be taking part in a series of online hustings over the next week.

Chaired by the national coordinator of the Green Party, Bláithín Gallagher, the hustings have been organised regionally, according to EU constituencies.

Green Party members from each region will be able to ask questions of the candidates via Zoom.

The dates for the hustings are as follows:

  • Tuesday, July 7, 7:00pm to 9:00pm, Ireland south constituency;
  • Saturday, July 11, 11:00am to 1:00pm, Dublin constituency;
  • Tuesday, July 14, 7:00pm to 9:00pm, midlands-north west and Northern Ireland constituencies.

Ballot papers were sent out to party members last week, and members have until Wednesday, July 22, to return them. The count will take place on Thursday, July 23.
