Burglaries
Gardaí in Co. Donegal have warned the public of “distraction burglary” – where a caller can gain entry to someone’s home based on a pretext or lie, while their accomplice can sneak in separately.
This crime frequently targets older people, who may be living alone, according to gardaí.
Some excuses to gain entry include: “I’ve broken down, can I use your phone?”; “I’ve had a fall, could I have a glass of water”; and “I’m from the council, there’s a burst main, I need to turn off your supply”.
Gardaí advise homeowners to “take precautions” and to not open the door to anyone before you have checked who they are and what they want.
Gardaí in Co. Meath have also warned people or businesses who hire contractors to carry out work to be “mindful” of calls or emails that may announce that the contractor has a new bank account, which they would like the funds to be transferred to.
If it occurs, gardaí advise that the bank or contractors are contacted directly by phone to receive confirmation on the request, as its possible fraudsters could be posing as the contractors.
