Tributes have been paid to former livestock auctioneer John (Johnny) Murphy passed away recently in his 99th year in Athenry, Co. Galway.

He worked in livestock marts across the west of Ireland, including the marts in Headford, Mountbellew, and Ballinasloe.

A condolence posted stated: “I knew John many years ago with his livestock auctioneering in Headford. It was a joy to watch and listen to him in action and he trying to get that extra bid for the seller (farmer)”.

“He was always very helpful and on the farmers side when working at the marts,” another condolence read.

Headford Mart management and staff said: “The management and staff of Headford Mart wish to extend our sympathy to John’s wife Peggy, children Mairead, Sean, Maura and Geraldine, and extended Murphy Family on the passing of John R.I.P.

“We have wonderful memories of John auctioneering here at the mart over the years.”

Mountebellew Co-op livestock mart stated: “All at Mountbellew Mart wish to extend our sincere condolences to the Murphy family and extended family of Johnny.

“Johnny was one gentleman and in our early day worked at our mart. He was very well liked by buyers and sellers and was always helpful to staff.”

Ballinasloe Mart offered their condolences and said: “We the management and staff of Ballinasloe Mart wish to extend our sympathy to John’s wife Peggy, children Mairead, Sean, Maura and Geraldine, and extended Murphy family on the passing of John R.I.P.,

“We have great memories of John at the mart,” they added.

The staff and committee at Tuam Mart offered their “condolences to the Murphy family on Johnny’s passing”.

The staff and committee at Gort Mart said: “Deepest sympathies to the Murphy family on the passing of Johnny. May he rest in peace.”

The funeral of John Murphy took place a week ago on Thursday, August 1 in the Church of the Sacred Heart, in Ryehill, Co. Galway.
