Farmer loses his life while sourcing water for animals in river tragedy
A farmer has lost his life after trying to source water from the River Bandon for his animals, in a heartbreaking incident.
Gardaí confirmed that together with emergency services they had responded to reports of a person in the water in the River Bandon at Dunmanway, Co. Cork, yesterday evening (August 12).
Gardaí stated: "A male (aged in his 50’s) was taken from the water and he was pronounced deceased".
His body was subsequently removed to Cork University Hospital mortuary and a post-mortem examination was to be arranged.
The coroner has also been notified.
The Health and Safety Authority (HSA) has confirmed that it is aware of the fatal incident and that it has launched an investigation.

Cork South-West TD and the leader of Independent Ireland, Michael Collins, told Agriland, that the loss of life was a "huge tragedy".
Deputy Collins said: "I want to convey my sincere sympathies to his family, his relations and his friends and neighbours, who must be absolutely devastated and shocked with this tragic happening.
"It is such a genuinely difficult time for the farming community due to the increased dry weather.
"A tragedy like this is extremely difficult and our sympathies are with the family at this time".

The fatal incident is the second loss to hit a rural community this week.
A man in his 90s died following a tractor-related incident at Aughawillian, Garadice, near Ballinamore, Co. Leitrim on Tuesday, August, 11.
The HSA is investigating the incident.

Meanwhile a man was also hospitalised this week following an incident involving livestock at Ballinamore Agricultural Show.
The agricultural show took place in Co. Leitrim on Tuesday, August 11.
According to the agricultural show spokesperson a bovine animal was involved in the incident.
It is understood that the man suffered a leg injury.
