ESB Networks and Agriland are collaborating at the National Ploughing Championship to promote farm safety when working near ESB Networks infrastructure.

Farming continues to be one of Ireland's highest-risk occupations, with many serious incidents occurring each year.

With larger machinery, higher loads and the diversification of farming activities, it is vitally important for farmers to be aware of the hazards associated with the electricity network, particularly overhead power lines and underground cables.

We are committed to helping farmers operate safely around electrical infrastructure and ensuring that ESB Networks can continue to support Ireland's rural communities and agricultural sector.

This year at the National Ploughing Championships, ESB Networks will be participating in Agriland panel discussions: 'Farm safety: What every farmer needs to know' on Tuesday, September 15; and 'Powering the Farm: Challenges and Opportunities' on Thursday, September 17.

These discussions will provide farmers with practical advice on working safely near overhead lines and underground cables, while also exploring evolving energy needs on the farm.

Farmers are encouraged to speak with ESB Networks representatives and pick up a copy of the ESB Networks Farm Safety Booklet, Farm Safely with Electricity.

The booklet provides essential guidance on identifying electrical hazards, maintaining safe distances from overhead lines, planning work safely, using the free 'Dial Before You Dig' service, and understanding what to do in the event of an electrical emergency.

Always know where overhead lines and underground cables are located; never assume equipment will fit safely beneath wires; and remember that electricity can arc across gaps without direct contact.
