Domestic Milk Intake by milk processors and co-ops was estimated at 982.7 million litres in July 2026, the Central Statistics Office (CSO) said.

According to the Milk Statistics July 2026 report, this represents a drop of 22.2 million litres or 2.2% when compared with July 2025.

However, the figure is actually up by 10.3 million litres or 1.1% based on the same month in 2024.

Stephanie Kelleher, statistician in the Agriculture Section of the CSO, said that between January to July this year, domestic milk intake was estimated at 5.57 billion litres.

This is down 84.9 million litres (-1.5%) when compared with the same period in 2025, while it was up 250 million litres or almost 5% when compared with January to July 2024.

Kelleher noted that fat content for July 2026 was 4.18%, down from 4.21% in July 2025.

Protein content also dropped slightly from 3.49% to 3.48% in the 12 months to July 2026.

"Butter production in July 2026 was 30,700 tonnes, down from 32,500 tonnes in July 2025.

"Skimmed milk powder (SMP) production dropped from 19,000 tonnes in July 2025 to 16,500 tonnes in July 2026," she said.

In other dairy related news, the Global Dairy Trade (GDT) index has increased after the latest trading event on Tuesday (September 1).

This was the fourth increase in the index in a row.

The index has increased by 0.9%, reflecting an average price for product sold during the trading event of €3,372/t.

The index figure now stands at 1,177, up from 1,166 at the last trading event.
