Excise clearances of marked gas oil, also known as green diesel, decreased by 3% in January to April 2026 compared with January to April 2025.

That is according to the Central Statistics Office (CSO) which has published its report on fuel excise clearances for April 2026.

Clearances for green diesel stood at 85 million litres in January 2026, 83 million litres in February 2026, 103 million litres in March 2026 and 100 million litres in April 2026.

Autodiesel clearances were 1.4% lower in January to April 2026 compared with January to April 2025, the CSO said.

In the 12-month rolling period of May 2025-April 2026 compared with May 2024-April 2025, autodiesel clearances were 2.7% lower.

Unleaded petrol clearances were 6.8% higher in January to April 2026 compared with January to April 2025 and 6.4% higher in the 12-month rolling period of May 2025-April 2026 compared with May 2024-April 2025.

Kerosene clearances were 5.8% lower in January to April 2026 compared with the same four-month period in 2025.

Commenting on the release, CSO statistician in the climate and energy division, Dr. Robert Stapleton said: "Autodiesel clearances were 2.7% lower in the 12-month rolling period of May 2025-April 2026 compared with May 2024-April 2025.

"This equates to 3.39 billion litres of autodiesel clearances and 1.15 billion litres of unleaded petrol clearances in the 12 months to April 2026. 

"Kerosene clearances were 5.8% lower in the year to date to April 2026 compared with the same period in 2025.

"Kerosene clearances for April 2026 were the lowest clearances for April since 2011. Kerosene is mainly used as a home heating fuel."
