Two drivers without the correct licenses for towing trailers will face a court appearance, according to Kilkenny gardaí.
The Kilkenny roads policing unit intercepted two drivers on Friday, September 27 who “weren’t allowed continue their journey as they were not properly licensed,” gardaí stated on social media.
Gardaí added that: “When you’re not licensed to tow, you’re not properly insured.”
The stops were conducted upon the two vehicles towing the trailer and the horsebox below:
While the post clarified that a court appearance is to follow for the drivers, gardaí also provided information surrounding the correct driving license while towing a trailer.
“Your standard car licence or category B licence allows you drive a vehicle or indeed vehicle and trailer with a combined gross vehicle weight [GVW] of 3,500kg,” the post from the Kilkenny gardaí clarified.
Gardaí stated: “Your average SUV while weighing 1,700kg unladen, likely has a gross vehicle weight or maximum allowable mass of around 2,600kg.
“Your horsebox which will likely be plated with its GVW or MAM [maximum authorised mass] will likely have a GVW of 2,500kg, so no go on a category B licence even if empty.
The exact same rules apply to car transport trailers and other larger trailers.
“You can still tow a trailer though on a category B licence but this will most likely be a single axle, braked if over 750kg GVW but not exceeding a combined rig GVW of 3,500kg,”gardaí stated.
What trailers can I tow on category B and BE driving licences?
Licence Type | Trailers |
---|---|
Category B | You can tow a trailer where: MAM no greater than 750 kg and/or MAM of trailer exceeds 750 kg but the MAM of the vehicle and trailer combined does not exceed 3,500kg. Note: As a general rule a category B licence does not allow you to tow a horsebox or livestock trailer transporting animals. |
Category BE | You can tow a trailer in all cases where: MAM of the vehicle and trailer combination is greater than 3,500kg but less than 7,000kg MAM of the trailer is greater than 750kg. However note in certain cases category B licence will allow you to tow a trailer over 750kg. Note: A car with a towing capacity of 2,000 kg can draw a trailer with a plated MAM¹ of 3,500kg provided the combination of the weight of the trailer and any load does not exceed the towing capacity of the towing vehicle e.g. 2,000kg. |
