A number of cattle were seized from a Co. Clare farm by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM) as part of an animal welfare-related enforcement operation yesterday (Wednesday, November 4).

The department has confirmed that it was supported by members of An Garda Síochána during the operation.

Agriland understands that several dead animals were also discovered on the holding during the operation.

In a statement, the department said it does not comment on any individual cases.

However, in general terms the department noted that it has "lead policy responsibility for animal welfare and takes the matter of animal welfare most seriously".

"Neglect of or causing unnecessary suffering to animals is not acceptable in our society.

"The department is committed to the policy that animal welfare standards are vigorously applied in a fair and even-handed manner," the statement added.

DAFM said that all herdowners have legal obligations and responsibilities to ensure that the health and welfare of the animals they own or control is safeguarded.

It added that under the Animal Health and Welfare Act 2013 "authorised officers may enter and inspect, at all reasonable times, any land or premises where an animal may be or has been present".

In cases where welfare issues arise, the department said that its approach is to proactively engage with herd owners to.

"Firstly, try and resolve non-compliance matters in a voluntary manner or failing that, through the issuing of legal notices or formal direction.

"The removal of animals from a farm is only undertaken as a last resort to protect animal health and welfare," it said.

The department added that it is "committed to the policy that animal welfare standards are vigorously applied in a fair and even-handed manner".

The department operates a confidential animal welfare helpline through which members of the public can report incidents of animal cruelty or neglect for investigation.

The dedicated email address and helpline in place for reporting suspected cases of animal welfare are: (01) 607 2379 and [email protected]
