As campaigning in the general election continues across the country, today (Tuesday, November 12) marks the deadline to register to vote.
This means that anyone who intends to vote in the upcoming election must have their registration submitted before midnight tonight.
An Coimisiún Toghcháin, Ireland’s independent electoral commission, has advised everyone, even if they have voted previously, to check the register online to ensure that they are included.
To check the register, you will need to provide your PPS number, date of birth and Eircode.
General election
In order to vote in the general election on Friday, November 29, you must be eligible and included on the electoral register for the area in which you live.
Every person who is an Irish or British citizen, is at least 18 years old, ordinarily resident in Ireland and is included in the register of electors is entitled to vote at the Dáil election.
The electoral commission has said that the deadline for applications for special and postal voting arrangements has now passed.
Applications to register or to change name or address details must be received by your local authority no later than today.
You can also submit an application or make any changes online at www.checktheregister.ie.
Vote
Art O’Leary, chief executive of the An Coimisiún Toghcháin, said that it takes under three minutes to register to vote.
“The 174 TD’s we elect to the 34th Dáil on Friday 29 November will decide on our behalf what laws are passed, changed or removed.
“Time and time again in Ireland’s elections we have seen the value of every single vote, so don’t miss out and make sure you’re registered to vote.
“The election campaign is the time to have conversations with your family and friends about the election, whether it’s at the breakfast table with family, over a drink with friends, or in your group chats to decide your vote, but if you’re not registered by Tuesday, November 12 you will miss your chance to have your say,” he said.
