Teagasc's annual series of seven 'Transferring the Family Farm' clinics for 2026 will take place next month.

The first event will take place at the Ardboyne Hotel in Navan, Co. Meath on October 6.

According to Teagasc, more than 20,000 farm families have benefited from this series of public events over the last decade.

These events will build on the Generational Renewal Week organised by Teagasc earlier in September.

The advisory and research body said that the age profile of farmers continues to increase, even though there are government tax incentives and Common Agriculture Policy (CAP) incentives for transferring farms.

Teagasc is encouraging farming families to participate in these Transferring the Family Farm events, where there will be the opportunity to talk to experts on a one-to-one basis.

The events are free, but booking is required, which can be done through the Teagasc events web page or by contacting a local Teagasc office.

Each event will be supported by a team of local solicitors, accountants, and Teagasc advisors to answer one-to-one queries in confidence.

There will also be mediators present at the events. Mediators are often used by farming families as facilitators to develop a succession plan in difficult circumstances.

The government will also be represented at these meetings by the Citizens Information Service, which provides information on topics like pensions, the fair deal scheme, and state entitlements.

For those interested in forming registered farm partnerships, staff from the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine will be in attendance.

Participating for the first time will be the Decision Support Service, which will be represented at events in Navan, Naas, and Kiltimagh.

James McDonnell, Teagasc farm management specialist, commented: "Farm succession is a journey, and these events allow farming families to gather information on areas such as taxes, incentives, education, fair deal, and farm schemes.

"The purpose of these events is to help farm families navigate the complexities of farm succession, putting them in contact with experts so that they can find the right path for their own family," McDonnell added.

Ruth Fennell, collaborative farming specialist with Teagasc, said: "Ideally, farm succession involves bringing the next generation into the farming business and gradually transferring responsibility, management and, ultimately, ownership of the assets as the current generation steps back.

"Collaborative options have proven hugely beneficial in facilitating this process. The various options will be covered in detail at these events," Fennell added.
