What farming events are lined up for this year's Science Week?

Science Week 2026 will take place from Sunday (November 8) to the following Sunday (November 15), and several farming and agriculture events have been arranged as part of the national initiative.

Teagasc has organised a number of events related to agriculture, including farm walks and science quizzes.

The Teagasc-organised events will run from tomorrow (Saturday, November 7) to next Saturday (November 14), and will see Teagasc researchers engaging with the public in classrooms, farmyards and other places.

The events will be co-ordinated by Teagasc's science communications and engagement officer Eimear Ferguson.

A number of hands-on and interactive events have been organised with a focus of showing how science is shaping farming, food and the environment.

Tomorrow will see a "storytelling session" in Mitchelstown Library in Co. Cork. The event is aimed at children over the age of five, and will explore soil, water, animals and nature.

This event runs from 11:30a.m to 12:30p.m and does not require booking.

Then on Tuesday (November 10) an event on water will take place explaining to secondary school students where rain water goes after it falls on a farm.

This online webinar will feature researchers from Teagasc, Met Éireann and VistaMilk Research Ireland Centre. Schools can register for the event on the Teagasc website.

The weeks' events will continue with farm walks at Teagasc's sites at Moorepark (Co. Cork), Grange (Co. Meath), and Athenry (Co. Galway), as well as a farm in Co. Kilkenny.

These events are for students, though some are already booked out; enquiries for the Athenry and Kilkenny events are still welcome, Teagasc said.

On Wednesday (November 11) a public photography exhibition titled 'Visions of Research' will take place at Teagasc Oak Park in Co. Carlow from 6:00p.m to 8:00p.m. Registration details for this event are available on the Teagasc website.

Also on Wednesday, a programme will be broadcast on RTÉ One at 8:30p.m called 'Ten Things to Know About: The Future of Farming'.

The programme will explore farming technologies, biodiversity-friendly practices, and solutions to food waste.

A series of primary school science quizzes will take place at Teagasc Oak Park, Ashtown and Moorepark. However, these are now fully booked.

Teagasc's series of events will conclude with an event at Marine Market in Cork city next Saturday (November 14) from 11:00a.m to 3:00p.m, where children and families can meet scientists and explore research.

Ahead of the programme of events, Teagasc said: "Whether your five or 55, a budding scientist, or simply curious about the world around you, Science Week at Teagasc 2026 is all about asking questions, making discoveries and having fun along the way."
