The weekend will see a mixture of showers and sunny spells across the country, according to the latest forecast from Met Éireann.

Today (Friday, September 25), will be a dry and bright day in many areas. Rain and drizzle in the south and east this morning will clear eastwards later.

Sunny spells and isolated showers this afternoon, those showers will become more frequent and heavy in the west and north-west later.

Highest daytime temperatures of 13° to 18°C in light to moderate south-west breezes, fresher along western coasts.

Tonight will be dry in many places, but scattered showers will continue in the west and north-west.

Overnight lows of 9° to 13° with light to moderate south-west winds, again fresher on the coast.

Weather

Saturday will bring a lot of dry and bright weather with sunny spells and isolated showers.

More frequent showers will develop in west and north-western areas later in the day.

Top temperatures will be of 15° to 20° in moderate to fresh south to south-westerly winds.

Cloud will increase on Saturday night bringing rain to western and southern parts, some heavy falls at times.

The southerly winds will be moderate to fresh, with lowest temperatures of 11° to 13°.

Sunday will be cloudy with outbreaks of rain, turning heavy in places. The rain will clear to scattered showers and sunny spells by the afternoon.

Top temperatures of 14° to 18° in moderate to fresh westerly winds.

Some rain and drizzle in the west on Sunday night, plenty of clear spells are expected elsewhere. Overnight lows of 6° to 10° in light southwesterly breezes.

Monday will be dry and bright, some patchy rain and drizzle may develop along Atlantic coasts in the afternoon.

Tuesday is currently expected to be a wet and windy day with widespread rain.

Met Éireann

As mixed conditions are expected over the coming week, Met Éireann said rainfall amounts will vary across the country.

Values will range from close to or below average amounts in the west, north and midlands, up to twice average levels in the south and east.

Mean air temperatures over the next seven days are expected to be between 13° and 15°.

Mean soil temperatures will decrease slightly, but are anticipated to stay above average.

The mixed or unsettled weather will lead to mostly moderate or poor drying conditions.

There will also be limited opportunities for spraying. Monday is currently forecast to be the driest and brightest day in the next week, giving the best opportunity for spraying.

Soil moisture deficits in Leinster and east Munster are currently ranging between 5mm and 39mm.

Elsewhere, soils are saturated or close to saturation with some poorly drained soils in the northwest close to waterlogged.

Over the coming week, values are expected to decrease for most areas.

Met Éireann has advised that weather conditions conducive to the spread of potato blight will occur in the north-west and west from Saturday night to Sunday afternoon.
