The weather will bring a mix of rain and dry spells across most of the country in the coming week, according to Met Éireann.

The national forecaster has issued a Status Yellow rain warning for four counties in Connacht this morning (Tuesday, August 4).

The warning, for counties Galway, Mayo, Roscommon and Sligo is currently in effect and expires at 9:00a.m this morning.

Heavy thundery downpours and lightening, with spot flooding, difficult travelling conditions, lightening strikes and poor visibility are all possible.

Looking at the general forecast, it will be mostly cloudy and rather misty to begin this morning, with some scattered outbreaks of showery rain and drizzle in places, and with some heavy thundery downpours for a time this morning, mainly across Connacht and possibly Ulster too, with some spot flooding.

It will brighten up with some sunny weather gradually developing, along with further showers, some heavy. There's a chance of more thunderstorms into the afternoon too, with these most likely over parts of Ulster and Leinster.

It will be humid today, with highest temperatures of 18° to 23° or 24°, warmest in the east and south, with light to moderate southwest winds, becoming mostly moderate westerly, and increasing fresh and occasionally gusty along the west coast in the evening.

It will be mainly dry at first tonight with just isolated showers and with some clear spells, the best of these across the east and south.

Cloud will increase overnight with a scattering of showers moving in from the west and with some persistent rain and drizzle spreading into parts of Ulster, north Connacht and possibly north Leinster.

Lowest temperatures tonight will be 10° to 14° in mostly moderate westerly winds, increasing fresh to strong and gusty in western and northwestern coastal parts.

Tomorrow (Wednesday, August 5) will be a rather windy day, and it will be fresher than recently.

It will be cloudy, with outbreaks of rain and drizzle affecting much of Ulster, and mainly north Connacht and north Leinster, accompanied by fresh to strong and occasionally gusty westerly winds, reaching near gale or gale force in northwestern coastal parts.

The rain will be heaviest and most persistent in the northwest, with some spot flooding possible.

Elsewhere there will be much drier and brighter weather with some sunny spells and a few well scattered showers, and mostly moderate to fresh or occasionally gusty westerly winds, strong at times.

Highest temperatures will range from 14° in the northwest, up to 19° or 20° in the southeast.

Wednesday night will be cloudy for a time across some northern areas, with outbreaks of rain; although the rain will ease and clear eastwards through the first half of the night.

Otherwise, there will be a mix of cloud, clear spells and a scattering of showers, these becoming mostly confined to parts of the west and north.

Lowest temperatures tomorrow night are expected to be 9° to 13° with the westerly winds continuing to ease mostly light to moderate.

Thursday (August 6) is set to be a bright day with some spells of sunshine, hazy in parts, and overall mainly dry weather for most.

There will be some scattered showers around too though, especially further to the north and west. Highest temperatures will be 15° to 19° in light to moderate west to northwest winds.

According to Met Éireann, it looks like Thursday night will be mostly dry in many areas with a mix of cloud and clear spells, though with some scattered showers in parts of the west and north.

Lowest temperatures should be 9° to 13° in light westerly breezes, becoming southerly or variable.

It appears at the moment that Friday (October 7) will also bring a good deal of dry weather for most, with a mix of cloud and sunny spells and with just a few scattered showers.

It is likely to become cloudier though further to the southwest, west and northwest, with some rain and drizzle starting to move in, most likely later in the day, though there is some uncertainty as regards timing.

Highest temperatures are expected to be 16° to 21° in mostly light to moderate southwest winds, freshening near western and northwestern coasts.
