Tributes have been paid following the death of a young dairy farmer from Renvyle, Co. Galway, named locally as Rian Sheridan, who lost his life in a car accident on Wednesday (March 27).

Sheridan was a dairy manager at Lisbeg Farms Co. Galway and a student at University College Dublin (UCD).

Sheridan is survived by his parents Finian and Maria, sisters Ciara, Doireann and Aebhin, along with his girlfriend Áine. 

Owner of Lisbeg Farms, Richard Bourns said: “This is a time of great sadness at Lisbeg Farms/Bournes Sport Horses.

“Rian had a smile for everyone he would meet , and when the meeting was over, everyone had a smile. We would like to extend our sincere condolences to his family and friends”.

Sheridan also played traditional music and had a love for football.

Tributes were paid by his local club, Kilbride GAA, which stated: “Rian has been part of the Kilbride community for many years and more recently transferred from Renvyle joining Kilbride GAA club as a player in 2024.”

“He played at full back with distinction for the Intermediate team’s first two league games. In his short few months training and playing with Kilbride he made a lasting impression as a person of integrity who was dedicated, kind and friendly. He will be sorely missed as part of the club.

“Our heartfelt sympathies go out to Áine, his parents sisters and extended family at this incredibly difficult time,” the team stated.

The intermediate team will retire the number three jersey for the upcoming season.

UCD GAA club said: “We are devastated to hear the awful news. Rian played with UCD GAA and we fondly remember him wearing the UCD jersey with pride. May he rest in peace.”

At the time of the tragic accident, Sheridan was on his way home from football training.

The crash, involving a lorry happened on the N61 Athlone Road at Newtown, Co. Roscommon shortly before 10:00p.m.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to the collision to come forward.

Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were traveling on the N61 at Newtown at the time of the collision are asked to make footage available to Gardaí or anyone with any information is asked to contact Roscommon Garda Station.
