Tributes have been paid to well-known cattle exporter John Horgan from Douglas, Co. Cork following his death on Saturday, December 28.

The late John Horgan was well known in the cattle-exporting business, following in his late father Dan Horgan’s footsteps, who was a key player in the trade of Irish cattle to England.

John Horgan started out trading cattle to England and also secured significant contracts for Irish cattle in countries such as Libya and Egypt.

According to his obituary on Rip.ie, the late John Horgan from Maryborough Woods, Douglas, Cork died “peacefully” on December 28, 2024, “in the excellent care of the nurses and doctors at the Bon Secours Hospital, Cork”.

The late cattle exporter was the “beloved husband of Liz, loving father of Johnny, Susie, Peter, Sarah and the late Lisa, adored grandfather of Emily, Chloe, Alice, Scarlett, Zach, Nicholas and Ralph”.

He was predeceased by his parents, Dan and Babs Horgan (Douglas House), his sisters Terry and Ann and his brothers Dan, Timmy and Tony.

The death notice continued: “Deeply mourned by his wife, family, sister Jill, brothers Jim, Billy, Roy, Michael, Philip and Peter, son-in-law Darryl, daughters-in-law Breffni and Bennary, nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law, brother in law, the Warnes family, relatives and friends.”

John Horgan will repose at Temple Hill Funeral Home, Boreenmanna Road of Jerh. O’Connor Ltd; today Monday, December 30, from 5:00p.m to 6:00p.m and the requiem mass will take place at 11:00a.m on Tuesday, December 31 in St. Columba’s Church, Douglas, Co. Cork with funeral afterwards to St. Finbarr’s Cemetery.

Tributes paid to the deceased described the late John Horgan as “a great business person” who “always had the farmers’ welfare at heart” and “a legend in the horse and cattle world”.
