Status Orange thunderstorm warning issued - Met Éireann

Met Éireann has issued a Status Orange weather warning for thunderstorms in three southern counties for this afternoon (Thursday, June 25).

The national forecaster said thunderstorms are likely to develop this afternoon and evening in places.

The Status Orange alert currently applies to counties Cork, Kerry and Waterford from 4:00p.m until 7:00p.m today.

A Status Yellow thunderstorm warning for Connacht and Donegal came into force at 3:00p.m and will remain valid until 6:00p.m on Friday (June 26).

Thunderstorms

Met Éireann said there is a risk of torrential downpours and localised flooding where thunderstorms occur.

The conditions could also result in lightning damage, gusty winds, hail and hazardous driving conditions.

Met Éireann has also extended a Status Yellow high temperature warning for the entire country until 9:00a.m on Saturday (June 27).

Maximum temperatures in excess of 27°C are expected in many counties, along with night-time minima in excess of 15°.

Some parts of the country are currently reporting temperatures in excess of 30°.

The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM) has also issued a 'Condition Orange' warning, indicating high fire risk.

This indicates that the conditions exist for wildfires in all areas where dead grasses and shrub fuels such as heather and gorse exist.

Farmers

Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Martin Heydon said it is important that farmers, horse and pet owners take steps to protect themselves and their animals during the high temperatures.

"Hot weather can pose a risk to pets and livestock and it is vital to take action to protect animals in these conditions.

"Having adequate shelter or shade and ensuring a plentiful supply of drinking water are particularly important to protect animals from heat stroke and discomfort," he said.

Minister of State with responsibility for Forestry, Farm Safety and Horticulture, Niall Collins advised farmers and outdoor workers to protect themselves in the hot weather and be "sun smart".
