The Irish Shorthorn Cattle Society’s Moyside / Croghan Shorthorn Breeders Clubs have hosted two show and sales of Shorthorn cattle this month at Elphin Mart Co. Roscommon and the Showgrounds, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Roscommon.

The first event was a haltered show and sale and took place at the Showgrounds, which took place on Saturday, April 6. The judge on the day was Mr. Michael Flanagan.

The Champion Shorthorn Heifer at the event was Lot 98 Raheenadeeragh Una 5, property of Adrian Flatley, Co. Mayo.

The March ‘23 born heifer was bred by Peter Luttrell from Co. Kildare and is sired by Doon Jupiter SH4929.

The Reserve Champion Shorthorn Heifer on the pre-sale show went to Lot 91 Suntown Fifi, property of Conor Kirwan, Co. Louth.

The June ‘22 born heifer is sired by Maralin Piper (a son of Chapelton Typhoon) and out of a Creaga Dice sired dam.

The Male Champion went to Lot 90 Bethlehem Smokey property of Thomas Fox, Co. Westmeath. The five star March 2023-born bull is sired by Castlehaven Bullet.

Taking the top price on the day was Lot 93 Carrow Gabbie, property of Louie Dockery, Co. Roscommon. The five star November 2022-born heifer was sired by Buncraggy Firefox SH4748 and went on to sell for €2,500.

Mr. John Beirne from Co. Leitrim received €2,000 for his March 2023 born bull. Lot 87 Kesh Holec is sired by Clonina Explorer SH4609 and out of a Ballyart Lucky-sired dam.

Lot 92 Kim Cowdashian, owned by Padraig Flanagan from Co. Roscommon also made €2,000. The October 2022-born heifer was bred by Ann Marshal, Co. Meath and is sired by Winalot Rodney 1r.

The club expressed its thanks to Kerrigan Group for its sponsorship and to the Midland and Western Livestock Improvement Society, as well as all who supported the event.

Elphin Shorthorn show and sale

The Moyside / Croghan Shorthorn Breeders Clubs held their annual Spring Sale on Monday, April 15, in Elphin Mart Co. Roscommon.

Mr. Tom Cox, who is no stranger to the Shorthorn breed, was the auctioneer on the evening and with the ringside full and over 60 lots on offer “there certainly was plenty of choice for those in attendance and watching online”, according to the society, with a 92% clearance of the lots placed on offer.

In the female section, the top price maiden heifer was lot 45B Tintrim Fiach. This April 2023-born roan heifer was the property of Marie and Anthony McNamara from Co. Clare and went on to sell for €2,100 to Mr. Ronan O’Hare from Co. Galway.

Fiach boasted a five star replacement value of €135 and she is sired by Caramba Nooaff and is out of a Rowanberry Frazer dam.

Lot no. 45A Fiach’s twin sister Tintrim Fatima achieved joint second-highest price of €1,850, purchased by Mr. John Carroll from Co. Mayo.

Also achieving €1,850 was lot 47C Listigue Linda, the property of Joe and James Cunney from Co. Sligo.

This March 2023-born daughter of Napoleon of Upsall and out of a Doon Erasmus dam was purchased by Mr. Dermot Connolly from Co. Galway.

In the in-calf section seen a top price of €2,000 paid for lot 29A, the property of Mr. Cecil Bowes from Co. Leitrim.

A daughter of Finiskill Bressie and in-calf to Finiskill Henry, Corawallen Jade was purchased by Mr. Roy Mooreherd, Co. Longford. Mr. Bowes also sold 29B Corawallen Gloria 617 to Mr. Tom Humphrey Co. Leitrim for €1,900.

In the male section, eight bulls were sent forward for sale on the evening with a full clearance recorded.

Topping out at €2,300 was lot 53A Milltown Pheonix, the property of Mr. Sean Casement Co. Westmeath.

This red five star bull with a replacement value of €166 is sired by Milltown Jake (a son of Hussar of Upsall).

His dam Castlehaven Grayling 47 is a granddaughter of Chapelton Typhoon. Phoenix was purchased by Mr. Noel Bohan from Co. Leitrim.

The second and third-highest priced bulls were sold by Mr. Philip McGauren from Co. Cavan.

Lot 55A Coolbawn Seamus’ a son of Doon Jupiter and from a Grousehall dam changed hands at €2,150 to Mr. Dominic Vesey from Co. Mayo.

Lot 56A Coolbawn Ben also a son of Doon Jupiter and from a Grousehall dam was sold for €2,000 to Mr. Val Keane from Co. Roscommon.

Other notable prices included lot 32B Ballylaffin Quack, property of Mr. Patrick Hehir Co. Clare and purchased by Ms. Ethel Lloyd Co. Westmeath at €1,750.

Lot 38C Bellview Gardenia, property of Jim and Mary Kilcullen from Co. Sligo was sold to Mr. Dermot Connolly from Co. Galway for €1,620.

Another heifer of Patrick Hehir’s, lot 39A Ardnaskea Lacey became the property of Mr. Tom Humphrey from Co. Leitrim at €1,600.

The Shorthorn cattle clubs expressed their thanks to Mr. Tom Cox auctioneer, the management and staff at Elphin Mart, Ms. Shauna Mulhall secretary of the Irish Shorthorn Society, and to all who helped towards the success of the sale.

A special autumn sale of Shorthorn cattle is set to be hosted by the clubs on Saturday, October 19, 2024.
