Preparation is underway for Irish Road Safety Week 2024, which kicks off on tomorrow (October 7), with a range of activities planned by the Road Safety Authority (RSA).

The first day of the week will mark ‘Tyre Safety Day’, where the RSA is inviting all motorists to call for a free tyre pressure check and thread depth inspection by any Irish Tyre Industry Association (ITIA) registered dealers around Ireland.

Locations for ITIA centres and a copy of a guide for tyre safety is available on the ITIA website.

On Tuesday, the RSA will be revealing new research into fatalities and serious injuries among pedestrians up to 2023. This report has been prepared using data from the Irish Road Traffic Collision Database.

The RSA will hold its annual conference on Wednesday (October, where the main focus will be on ‘distracted driving’ and will feature speakers from Ireland and abroad who will share research into the impact of driver distraction and best practice in addressing the issue.

The next meeting of the Road Safety Youth Forum will be held in Co. Dublin on Thursday, October 10. The forum aims to provide a “safe space” for young people to discuss their common concerns on road safety.

The RSA will also be distributing packs in schools for road safety on Friday, with over 50,000 high visibility vests to be given to pre-schools nationwide, in time for National Child Safety Day.

Road Safety Week

CEO for the RSA, Sam Waide said: “If you or your organisation are hosting your own event in your community, we want to hear from you. We can add your event to our IRSW events list on the RSA website and encourage more people to attend.

“Get involved, find out what’s happening in your local community, and play your part in saving lives and preventing serious injuries on our roads.”

The RSA will also hold a car seat checking service to ensure children are travelling safely, in counties Leitrim, Roscommon and Longford throughout the week.

The RSA Leading Lights in Road Safety Awards are back this year, with nominations now open for 2024 until Friday, October 11.

The awards showcase individuals or groups committed to making roads safer. The awards recognise the contribution made to reducing serious injuries and deaths on our roads.
