On Wednesday, April 14, Roscommon Mart held its weekly sheep sale, consisting of spring lambs, hoggets, cull ewes and ewes with lambs at foot.

Starting with the hoggets, a super trade was seen, in particular for ewe hoggets.

The top price in the hogget section was €196/head for two at 62kg. The majority of those 50kg plus hoggets sold upwards of €170/head, with many of the top-quality hoggets selling above €180/head.

Hoggets in the 46-49kg weight bracket generally made from €148/head up to €180/head.

40-45kg hoggets generally traded from €138/head up to €168/head. Hoggets less than 40kg sold back to €110/head for 32kg.

Sample hogget prices:
  • Three at 63.3kg sold for €188/head;
  • 10 at 52.2kg sold for €188/head;
  • Two at 52kg sold for €182/head;
  • 12 at 50.3kg sold for €176/head;
  • Two at 47.5kg sold for €174/head;
  • Seven at 48.4kg sold for €168/head;
  • Seven at 42.9kg sold for €166/head;
  • Four at 40.8kg sold for €146/head;
  • 15 at 37.6kg sold for €124/head.

Spring lambs

Looking at the spring lambs on offer in Roscommon on Wednesday, all bar one lot weighed 40kg or more.

The one pen under 40kg, which were two springs at 34kg, sold for €112/head.

Lambs in the 40-44kg weight bracket made from €146/head for 40.8kg up to €174/head for lambs just over 44kg.

45-49kg lambs traded from €170/head up to €178/head.

Sample spring lamb prices:
  • Seven at 48.4kg sold for €178/head;
  • One at 47kg sold for €176;
  • Seven at 46.4kg sold for €174/head;
  • Five at 44.8kg sold for €174/head;
  • 16 at 45kg sold for €170/head;
  • Seven at 41.9kg sold for €152/head;
  • Four at 40.8kg sold for €146/head.

Cull ewes

A strong entry of cull ewes was seen at Roscommon Mart on Wednesday, with the majority of the ewes on offer, made up of heavier types.

Prices for those heavy, well-fleshed ewes reached €178/head for two. In general, those fleshed and heavy ewes made from €140/head, up to €160-165/head in general, with the exception of a handful of ewes that made from €166-170/head.

Medium-framed ewes generally traded from €110/head up to €135/head, with light store ewes selling back to €64.

Ewes with lambs at foot

A good trade was also seen for ewes with lambs at foot, with prices starting at €210, for a horned-ewe with a single lamb.

In general, ewes with single lambs at foot made from €210/unit up to €270/unit.

Ewes with two lambs at foot started at €250/unit and sold up to a high of €305/unit.
