There are a number of upcoming sales taking place around the country that will be of interest to pedigree breeders, suckler farmers and dairy farmers.

The first of these upcoming sales takes place this Wednesday, September 11, and will be of interest to dairy farmers looking to add replacement in-calf heifers to their herd.

Next up on Saturday, September 14, is the Castleview and Roundhill Limousins 10th annual Genetic Advantage Sale at Central Auctions Roscrea, Co. Tipperary.

Next month, on Friday, October 4, a special sale of 50 in-calf heifers and 10 suckler cow and calf pairings will take place on behalf of Bovanto Livestock in Carnaross Mart, Co. Meath.

Online dairy heifer sale

This coming Wednesday (September 11) Doyle Hunt and Hunt will host an online sale of dairy heifers which will kick off on the MartEye platform at 7:00p.m.

According to Ray Hunt from Doyle Hunt and Hunt the sale “promises to deliver an extraordinary opportunity for dairy farmers looking to strengthen their herd with some of the best-bred in-calf heifers available”.

He said: “The sale offers something to suit every dairy farm and will have suitable replacement heifers for grass-based and high-input systems.

“The sale will be hosted on the MartEye platform, allowing you to bid online from the comfort of your home or office.”

Included in the sale is February-calving Friesian heifers with an average Economic Breeding Index (EBI) of €263, bred from a low-input herd delivering 3.7% protein and 4.6% fat.

Other lots include Friesian-cross (FRX) in-calf heifers bred from a herd producing 529kg of milk solids with fat and protein contents of 4.9% and 3.88% respectively and an average EBI of €250.

50 pedigree Limousin heifers

This coming Saturday, September 14, Castleview and Roundhill Limousins will come together to host their 10th Genetic Advantage Sale at Central Auctions, Roscrea, Co. Tipperary.

A total of 50 of what are described as “high-quality pedigree Limousin heifers” will be offered in the sale.

Sean O’ Sullivan’s Castleview herd is well-known in breeding circles as breeding some of the most widely used Limousin AI sires including:

  • Castleview Gazelle;
  • Castleview Gringo;
  • Castleview Reece;
  • Castleview Casino.

The G7 cow family has helped to drive the consistency in the Castleview herd, with Castleview Gazelle (ZAG), Gringo (GWO) Casino (CWI) all finding their roots in the G7 family tree.

Between these three bulls out of the G7 family, there are over 174,000 calves sired by them in the country.

Castleview Gazelle (ZAG), standing in NCBC a son of G7, has been one of the most used sires in Irish AI on both dairy and suckler herds since 2016. He has over 131,000 births registered with ICBF.

The Roundhill herd, owned by Tim and Doreen Corridan will be bringing a selection of polled and horned heifers to the sale with their 25 lots.

The Genetic Advantage Sales live up to their name, having consistently sold the genetics of Champions Tullamore Champions 2015, 2016, 2018 and 2022 and well as Balmoral 2022.

To mark 20 years of the Genetic Advantage Sales, the Castleview and Roundhill herds will be auctioning three lots in aid of Volunteers in Irish Veterinary Assistance, with all proceeds going to the charity.

Sale of 60 commercial sucklers

Anthony Mimna from Drumreilly, Co. Leitrim, is set to host a special sale of 60 lots of commercial-bred sucklers. This sale will take place in Carnaross Mart, Co. Meath on Friday, October 4, at 7:00p.m. with viewing from 5:00p.m.

The consignment on offer in the sale includes 50 in-calf heifers and 10 suckler cow and calf pairings.

The sale will include a selection of continental suckler-bred Limousin-crosses, Belgian Blue-crosses, Parthenaise-crosses and Charolais-crosses ranging in weights primarily from 650-800kg.

The heifers on offer in the sale are served to Artificial Insemination (AI) Limousin sires including:

  • Ewdenvale Ivor (LM2014);
  • Loyal (LM4184);
  • Townleyhall Rupert (LM7719);
  • Tomschoice Scorpion (LM1109);
  • Elderberry Galahad (EBY);
  • Slieve Pablo (LM7266).

Heifers are Lepto-vaccinated, dosed regularly, mineral supplemented and can be exported directly from Carnaross Mart on sale night. Heifers can be viewed on-farm before the sale, by appointment only.
