Origin Enterprises has announced that it has appointed a group commercial director, who will take up the position from October 1, 2020.

Alex Steel will take up the newly-established role, and will report directly to the group CEO Sean Coyle.

In the role, Steel will oversee the group’s commercial operations and assume responsibility for a number of central support areas including portfolio, commercial excellence, R&D and innovation.

Steel joined Origin as group head of commercial development in December 2019. Before that, he worked at Syngenta AG, a producer of crop protection products, for 11 years, working in a number of senior positions in different countries.

Commenting on the appointment, Coyle said: “We are delighted that [Steel] will now assume the new role of group commercial director, where he will drive the continued development of the business; and optimise and align our central organisation from a commercial perspective.”

CEO steps down

This isn’t the only changing of the guard at Origin this year.

Former CEO Tom O’Mahony announced his retirement from his role and from the group board of directors earlier this year.

He was replaced by Coyle on July 1. O’Mahony had been in the role at the helm of the agricultural services group for 13 years.

Coyle had been group financial officer before he replaced O’Mahony.

In other appointments, Origin appointed Brendan Kent as managing director of the group’s agri-inputs division last month. He is set to take over the role on October 1.
