Nephin Renewable Gas (Nephin RG), an agri-centric renewable energy company based in Tipperary Town, is driving Ireland’s transition to clean energy by producing biomethane from locally sourced agricultural feedstocks.
By working directly with farmers, the company is helping to build a sustainable industry that supports rural communities and protects the environment.
Agri-centric means placing agriculture and rural communities at the core of business.
Nephin RG works with farmers, landowners, and local contractors to source feedstock locally.
Each AD plant creates jobs, provides reliable markets for farmers, and enhances air, water, and soil quality, supporting circular economy principles and sustainable biomethane production.
Through its agricultural logistics arm, Nephin Agri, the company sources slurries, manures, agricultural wastes, and crops such as grass.
This creates long-term, sustainable income for farmers while helping them meet environmental commitments.
Since 2023, Nephin RG has grown from a four-person team to 20 specialists with more than 200 years of combined experience in renewable natural gas (RNG) and agriculture.
The team has contributed to RNG projects across Ireland, the UK, and internationally, positioning the company as a leader in large-scale biomethane development in rural Ireland.
Nephin RG uses anaerobic digestion (AD) to convert feedstock into biogas and nutrient-rich digestate.
The biogas is refined into biomethane and injected into the national gas grid, while the digestate is processed into a bio-based fertiliser that provides a sustainable alternative to imported chemical fertiliser and improves local soil and water quality.
Nephin RG have hit the ground running with its first facility under construction in Co. Mayo and four further projects currently in the planning system.
The company continues to strengthen its role as a pioneer of Irish biomethane and a trusted partner for farmers, rural businesses, and local communities.
Their goal is clear: to build a thriving, sustainable, and profitable future for Irish agriculture while helping Ireland achieve its climate and energy targets.
Graeme Lochhead, managing director of Nephin RG, said: “Our mission is simple: to work alongside farmers, creating new markets for crop and slurry, while helping Ireland transition to cleaner energy.
“Biomethane production is part of the farm cycle. It complements agriculture, provides income for farmers, and delivers environmental benefits.
“Every project is about partnership. We want our plants to bring real benefits for farmers, contractors, and rural communities.
“Together, we can grow a cleaner, greener future for Irish agriculture.”
