Mule ewe lambs made over €170/head at Tullow Mart’s special breeding sale on Saturday, while hogget ewes traded from €135-190/head.

The sale was held as part of the mart’s special breeding sales which seen over 500 ewe lambs and 300 ewes pass through the ring on the day of the sale.

Farmers traveled from far and wide to sell their stock, with some farmers travelling from Co. Tipperary and Co. Cork to sell ewes and ewe lambs in the Co. Carlow venue.

Farmers from Co. Carlow and the surrounding areas were particularly keen to add Mule genetics to their flocks and this was evident from the prices achieved for ewe lambs suitable for breeding and hogget ewes on the day.

Sample ewe lamb prices:
  • 10 ewe lambs: €155/head
  • 10 ewe lambs: €152/head
  • 10 ewe lambs: €140/head
  • 10 ewe lambs: €138/head
  • 10 ewe lambs: €97/head

The Mule is a cross between a Blue Faced Leicester ram and a Scotch or Lanark ewe and they are renowned for their maternal characteristics.

Demand on the day was best for the heavier ewe lambs on offer, with lots weighing from 36-45kg trading from €135-170/head.

But, the lighter ewe lambs on offer (weighing in the region of 30kg) generally sold from €90/head and up.

There was also a selection of mule hogget ewe hoggets on offer and these lots traded from €135-190/head, while a small number of Blue Faced Leicester rams made €300-400 each.
