Man taken to hospital after train strikes tractor in Offaly
A man has been taken to hospital after a train struck a tractor in Co. Offaly this afternoon (Thursday, September 3).
The incident involving a train travelling from Westport to Dublin happened shortly before 4:00p.m at Meelaghans, Tullamore.
It is understood that the train struck the tractor at a level crossing.
Gardaí, emergency services and crews from Iarnród Éireann are at the scene.
In a statement to Agriland, a spokesperson for An Garda Síochána said: "Gardai and emergency services are currently at the scene of an incident involving a train and a tractor, at the Meelaghans, Tullamore, Co. Offaly, that occurred this afternoon, Thursday September 3, 2026 at approximately 3:50pm.
"A male has been conveyed to hospital for treatment of injuries believed to be non-life-threatening at this time".
The spokesperson added that "no further information is available at this time".
Train
A spokesperson from Iarnród Éireann told Agriland that train services between Portarlington and Tullamore have been suspended until further notice following the incident.
"The 1:10p.m train service from Westport to Heuston struck a tractor at a user worked level crossing near Tullamore shortly before 4:00p.m this afternoon.
"Emergency services attended and one person has been taken to hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
"Our teams are working on clearing the line and alternative transport arrangements are in place for passengers impacted.
"Services between Heuston and Galway and Westport are suspended until further notice," the spokesperson added.
Iarnród Éireann said bus transfers for the affected passengers have departed Portarlington and will travel to Athlone, where passengers can transfer onto a train service.
