Leo Varadkar is set to announce today (Wednesday, March 20) that he is to resign as Taoiseach and the leader of Fine Gael.

Varadkar has been a TD since 2007.

Varadkar, who is 45, is currently in his second term as Taoiseach having been elected by Dáil Éireann to the role again in December 2022.

He had previously been Taoiseach from 2017 to 2020.

Prior to this Varadkar had been the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment from June 2020 to December 2022 and was also Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport.

He has been the leader of Fine Gael party since 2017 and the process to find a new leader will now get underway.
