Trevor Myles has been appointed as the new chair of The Irish Agricultural Supply Industry Standards (IASIS) organisation.

He formerly worked as a pesticide compliance specialist with the Pesticides Registration and Control Division (PRCD) of the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM) and brings with him over forty years’ experience in pesticides use and compliance.

Myles has a wealth of technical knowledge and stakeholder relationships from right across the agricultural sector, including among advisors, merchants, co-ops and retailers.

He will greatly assist IASIS in its mission to support training and continuing education in the safe use of  plant protection, animal health and pest control products.

IASIS maintains registers of participation in programmes of training and continuing professional education (CPE) which are an efficient record of regulatory compliance for government, and those advising and retailing agricultural inputs. IASIS services are delivered on a ‘not-for-profit’ basis to the agricultural supplies industry in Ireland.

IASIS is also a Lantra-accredited provider of training to the agricultural inputs sector. Lantra is one of the leading awarding bodies for land-based industries in both the UK and the Republic of Ireland.

“Education and training are at the heart of all the activities undertaken by IASIS. Obviously, the outworking of the new veterinary regulations will be of specific interest to the organisation.

“There is also a major job of work to be done in communicating the challenge of resistance across all aspects of agriculture.

“Given my background in pesticide compliance, I am fully aware of the challenges posed by the growing level of resistance within crops to applied agrochemicals.

“And, where animal production systems are concerned, the threat posed by antimicrobial resistance is equally relevant,” he said.

Commenting on Myles’ appointment IASIS board member, John Keogh, said:

“IASIS is delighted that Trevor Myles has agreed to accept the role of chair and takes over from Paddy Browne, formerly of Teagasc.

“Paddy has been chair of IASIS for the past six years and has provided outstanding service and guidance to the organisation in its continuing development.

“Trevor’s knowledge and experience will be immensely beneficial to IASIS as we prepare for the future which will include increasing regulatory requirements in the use and management of plant and animal health products,” Keogh said.

IASIS was established to achieve excellence in training, thereby facilitating the sustainable distribution and sale of plant protection, animal health and pest control products.

The organisation also acts to ensure storage, sales and display facilities are designed and constructed in compliance with relevant statutory requirements and are managed and operated to achieve a high level of protection for workers and for the environment.
