The Veterinary Council of Ireland (VCI) has published new information aimed at providing guidance to animal owners in their interactions with veterinary professionals.

The VCI is responsible for the regulation and management of the practice of veterinary medicine and veterinary nursing in Ireland.

The ‘Getting the best for your animal’ advice is as a guideline for animal owners, outlining expectations from their veterinary team and their own responsibilities in ensuring the health and welfare of their animals and pets.

Some of the key points addressed in the guidance document include:

  1. Veterinary team’s responsibilities;
  2. Owner’s responsibilities;
  3. Partnership for animal welfare;
  4. Emergency services and out-of-hours service;
  5. Client-patient-practice relationship (CPPR);
  6. Fees and payments.

The information also advises animal owners on professional standards and accreditations in the industry, key questions to ask a veterinary practitioner and record keeping.

Guidance for animal owners

The guidance document also highlights the significance of a combined approach to animal care, clarifying the roles and duties of both veterinary professionals and animal owners.

CEO and registrar of the VCI, Niamh Muldoon said:

“This guidance aims to empower animal owners with the knowledge and understanding necessary to ensure the wellbeing of their pets.

“By fostering clear communication and mutual respect between veterinary professionals and animal owners, we can collectively work towards the best possible outcomes for our animal companions,” the CEO said.

The leaflet also highlights the correct usage of terminology, such as “specialist” within the veterinary field, as only those who have been registered with the VCI’s register of specialists can use the title.

Animal owners are encouraged to verify the credentials of practitioners claiming the “specialist” status.

The VCI has urged all animals owners to become familiar with the contents within the information, which is readily available on its website, to ensure the best care for animals.
