National forecaster Met Éireann has said it expects lower than average rainfall amounts this week which will lead to improved field trafficability.

Most well drained soils will become trafficable with some improvement in moderate and poorly drained soils, too, according to Met Éireann’s latest farming commentary published today (Tuesday, April 16).

Currently, many well drained soils are saturated, while some well drained soils in the south and east are trafficable. Most poorly drained and moderately drained soils are saturated or waterlogged.

Met Éireann said that even though winds will ease, drying conditions will improve as the week progresses. There will also be opportunities for spraying after midweek as winds ease and it becomes drier.

Met Éireann forecast

High pressure in the Atlantic is forecast to gradually move closer in the coming days and will come in over the country by the weekend. Conditions will improve day on day as high pressure begins to influence conditions.

Whether conditions will turn milder for the second half of the week with lighter winds and drier conditions overall. However, there will still be some light rain or drizzle at times, the forecaster said.

It will be much drier than average in many areas. Some southern parts will receive just a couple of mm of rain with some areas staying fully dry. Many areas will record just 25% of the usual rainfall for the rest of the week.

For the coming week, while it will remain a little cool in places today and tomorrow (Wednesday, April 17), it will become milder with mean air temperatures expected to be slightly above usual, ranging from 9° to 11°.

Soil temperatures have been above normal over the past seven days, ranging from 8.6° to 11.0°, and will remain above normal over the coming week, according to the national forecaster.
