Close to the Borris area of Co. Carlow, a number of sheep have recently been reported as stolen due to a recent suspected theft.

A garda spokesperson told Agriland that there 11 sheep are believed to have been stolen from a commonage area of Mount Leinster.

Gardaí confirmed they are investigating the theft of livestock in Borris which was reported on Wednesday, March 27.

The discovery of the theft was made when a walker discovered tags on a roadside to Mount Leinster, that had been cut from the ears of the sheep.

It is believed the sheep had been on the commonages of Mount Leinster for some months, but would return to their owners every evening to be fed and then return to the mountain themselves afterwards.

Irish Farmers’ Association (IFA) sheep chair for Co. Carlow, Marion Dalton told Agriland that the theft of the sheep was “very unusual for this area”.

“I hope they get them back, the year is difficult enough without that,” she added.

Dalton also said that dogs worrying sheep is an issue that she hears of “regularly” happening in the Mount Leinster area.

She said that the only issue is where dogs are “let off their lead”, not when they are on a lead with their owners.
